Epilepsy information and treatment options
As an epilepsy specialist, Dr. Michael Fong has been specifically trained to treat patients who experience seizures.
The diagnosis of epilepsy is often life changing, and it is common to be left with a large number of uncertainties that often provide additional worry. Gathering as much information as possible and discussing the considerations involved empowers patients to take control of the condition. Dr. Michael Fong serves as a partner in this process for many patients from all walks of life, from greater Sydney, regional and rural New South Wales and beyond.
Dr. Fong holds a special interest in medically refractory epilepsy - where patients continue to have seizures despite anti-seizure medication. These seizures may not respond to further medicines and other techniques may be needed in order to reduce or stop them. Dr. Fong has specific training in the utilisation of all techniques of seizure reduction.
Discussion about what types of procedures may benefit a patient is often very specific to the unique details and Dr. Fong is happy to guide patients through this discussion.
Current treatment options
Epilepsy surgery to cure epilepsy, including novel less invasive techniques, and
Neuromoduation (Vagal Nerve Stimulation) - the use of implantable stimulation devices in order to reduce seizures. Dr Fong is one of few practitioners in private practice in NSW to offer Vagal Nerve Stimulation for seizure treatment, and was the first practitioner in Australia and New Zealand to utilize the most current SenTiva device.
Dr. Fong is also actively involved in introducing new treatment prospects for medically refractory epilepsy into Australia, having trained in these techniques at Yale New Haven Hospital.
Future treatment prospects
Deep Brain Stimulation
Responsive Neurostimulation
These exciting new treatment prospects will hopefully become available in Australia soon, so together we can continue bettering the lives of patients with epilepsy.
